Marissa Valeri, a member of the most recent Charter Review Commission, stopped by the garage to share details of the City Charter and the process for amending it. Rockville Mayor and Council have hearings scheduled at the end of January and in February to begin the process of reviewing the commission's work and possibly adopting their recommendations. The City Charter is Rockville’s governing document and states our rules about elections and the way our local government is structured. The Charter Review Commission looked at a bunch of potential changes, with the proposal to add seats to the City Council and districting the City potentially having the biggest impact on the way our government interacts with residents. Money and partisanship make national elections much more attention-grabbing than city elections, but it’s our local government that we experience in our daily lives. When our trash gets picked up, when we're looking for a parking spot downtown, and when the flowers in the medians bloom each spring we are experiencing our government at work.
