Esau and Jacob came from a mess of a family situation--with favoritism, deception and resentment. Esau understandably developed a hateful grudge against Jacob after he stole Esau's birthright and blessing. So when they finally saw each other 14 years later, Jacob was terrified his brother would kill him.
