Listen "Travis Johansen on USD's first road win of '25, forging identity, defensive standouts, Northern Iowa"
Episode Synopsis
Some good old fashioned cliches were served up about South Dakota's 19-14 win at Indiana State — typically, and it appears once again, one of the worst MVFC teams: Just Win, Babhy Any road win is a good win An ugly win is still a beautiful win You get the point. Then, some in the USD camp were quick to mention how the game did not feel as close as the score indicated, particularly considering the Coyotes possessed the ball for 45 of the game's 60 minutes and scored five times. The glass-half-empty fan could look at a failure to finish four of those scoring drives with a touchdown, a failure to close the door up 19-7 and let the Sycamores to be in go-ahead striking distance until late fourth quarter, and failure to pull off a passing play of more than 20 yards. Oh, and the penalties. First-year coach Travis Johansen addressed all of this while diving into the reasons the rushing attack remains stout and which defenders are emerging as go-to playmakers. At the end, a preview of the road game at Northern Iowa, a program Johansen is intensely familiar with and a UNI Dome which provides similar challenges visitors to the Dakota Dome experience.
