Listen "Happiness journey with Dr Dan podcast: Season 9 Ep8: Special guest and Marriage/ Family Therapist Chao Zhao"
Episode Synopsis
Do relationship experts, mental health providers, or therapists struggle in their dating life? Have they been in toxic relationships? Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we wanted to share with you whether an Asian mental health provider struggles with her dating life, how she sees herself in dating, and how she grows.
Chao Zhao is a bilingual Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, with a Clinical Art Therapist specialization, and has a focus on working with Asian and people from multi-cultural backgrounds to develop healthier relationships.
She believes “art is a universal language, can help you promote freedom in expression, feel heard and seen, and be utilized by anyone in need.” Her own experience coming to the US to pursue her career transition, finding herself, struggling with toxic relationships, and becoming a mental health therapist will provide you with some new insight into your relationship and life in general.
What are the practical 5 step self-check tips for us to apply to our relationships when we are in doubt?
Education: learn about what is a toxic relationship? What are the signs you have seen that mean to you?
Knowing who you are: your core values, and who you want to be?
Connect your inner strength: Understand your cultural background and your childhood experience.
Self-compassion: setting a clear boundary starts with knowing yourself.
Prevention: finding your own peace and not triggering any unhealthy response through regular journaling, meditation, or yoga practice.
She is inspired by this quote from the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu to encourage us to find ourselves–our inner strengths,
“Knowing others is intelligence;
Knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength;
Mastering yourself is true power.”
