Remember that with Moses and then Joshua, God had made great promises to the nation if they would obey Him and keep His commandments. There were also warnings if they disobeyed. God had explicitly told them to not intermarry with the people who would be in the land that He was driving out before them. The people there worshipped other gods and would cause Israel to sin. 
Proverbs 4:23 Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.
Solomon wrote these wise words but didn’t heed them. Guarding our heart is OUR RESPONSIBILITY!!
If we're not careful we can begin to have a divided heart toward God.
