Episode Synopsis

Sermon | 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 | "You Are Not Your Own" by Rev. Joseph Sanford at Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin, Indiana

I am not my own anymore than you are your own.
We belong to Jesus Christ and to Christ’s body, the church.

What I do with my self—my soma—impacts y’all.
What you do with your self—your soma—impacts us all.

So if you are dominated by anything—food, lust, individualism, nationalism, privilege, needing to be heard or be right—then we will all suffer.

How could this man in Corinth and his relationship with his step-mom NOT impact other relationships?

If some people in the church are proud…and others are not—that’s a problem.
We know that some WERE proud of this relationship because of their short-sighted view on God’s grace…
Because the letter was written in the first place, we know that some WERE NOT proud of this relationship.

How did this divide impact the gatherings of that church?
How did it impact their worship?
How did it impact their shared lives?
How did it impact their effort to see each other as equals?
How did it impact their ability to actually live into the freedom that Christ offers?

You see this in your own families and circles, right? Because these things happen when we are so focused on ourselves rather than the bigger reality announced to us as The Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Another way Paul would have us think about this is where we compromise our faith in practice.
There is a tendency to compartmentalize our faith.

Because it’s easy to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit when you’re surrounded by others who honor that effort
But we are tempted to compromise our commitment away from here.

We make decisions at work, school, or in our homes that we wouldn’t want people to know about.
We bend our values when an opportunity arises
Or, more subtle, we spend time praying for what we want from God rather than what God wants from us
“Don’t mix church and politics” as if they are two separate things—as if the life we are called to live following Jesus has nothing to do with how we vote
We think how we live as individuals isn’t the church’s business

But Paul would remind us:

You are not your own

Saying “yes” in baptism is saying “yes” to being apart of the body of Christ—the church

It’s a commitment to live bigger than ourselves.
It’s a submission to no longer serve our SELF, but to live into loving God and neighbor in all we do and in all we are.
It’s giving our-SELVES over to the Holy Spirit…

Saying, no longer will I allow anything else to dominate my heart…
No longer will I depend upon my own way…

From now on I will trust my whole self to God…

I will commit myself to the body of Jesus Christ through my prayers, my presence, my gifts, my service, and my witness…

From now on I will assert my identity as a part of the Temple of God in the world.…my SELF is no longer first

Anything I say, think, do, or strive to become will be about bringing glory and honor to God.
I won’t seek accolade for myself, but will give my all to allow the goodness, the love, and the mercy of God to flow through me into every aspect of my life:

What I watch on TV
Who I listen to for influence
How I spend my money on food, clothes, leisure, and trying to look younger
How I invest my time and energy
How I choose to allow my emotions to be influenced
The things in which I choose to place my focus
My goals and ambitions

Because of the Gospel, how I live will be NOT for me, but for God.
I’ll remember that what I do with my SOMA impacts the church…

What I devote my SOMA to impacts my world…
The focus of my SOMA impacts my heart…
My SOMA impacts my connection to God…
It impacts my cooperation with the Spirit…
It impacts how I experience freedom in Christ.

What I do with my SOMA…matters for so much more than myself.
For better or worse.
The Holy Spirit residing in you and around you through the church body HEALS us and LEADS us into the life of joy, love, and peace for which we truly long in our heart of hearts.
