Episode Synopsis

On tonight's episode of Global National:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to resign as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and as Prime Minister of Canada. But it's not a complete surprise as he's been under pressure for months – even Trudeau admitted the internal battles within his caucus made it clear he had to go.

What does that mean for Canada? Well, Trudeau will stay on as prime minister until his party chooses a new leader. As of now, no one has officially announced they want to succeed Trudeau, but several candidates are expected to run for the job.

Trudeau’s decision plunges the country into a period of political uncertainty at a precarious time – just before president-elect Donald Trump takes office in the U.S. again. This, all as Canadians fear Trump’s recent threats of 25 per cent trade tariffs may become a reality on January 20.
