Set Your Minds On Things Above

Listen "Set Your Minds On Things Above"

Episode Synopsis

Our mindsets determine our attitudes. A wrong mindset leads to a bad attitude. But if our minds are set on God and His word, our attitude will become godly. This is the devotion today: Set your minds on things above.”  Scripture said in Colossians 3:2, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This is an exhortation to fix your mind on Christ, who you are in Him, His spiritual blessings, and His purposes for your life. This is how we discover the life we have in Jesus, a life different from the people of the world with all their ungodly standards and sinful practices.  There is an element of spiritual struggle here, mainly because a real born-again believer of Christ still has the old sinful self with its thoughts, desires, and ungodly patterns and behaviors. When Paul said, "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things" (Colossians 3:2), he admits the reality of an inward transition. We must put to death, therefore, the old self with its sinful attitudes and mindsets such as pride, but must clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness,  patience, forgiveness, unity, and peace (Colossians 3:5-15). God made this possible to a life of faith for the Holy Spirit indwells us. We must submit and ask for His help. God’s Spirit uses the Bible, to renew our minds and put to death our sinful selves for true godliness and holiness. So set your minds on being loving, kind, compassionate, self-control and all godlinessthrough constant submission to God’s Spirit. Where is your mind settled, on the earthly or eternal? When a person is settled on accumulating earthly possessions, for example, the mind is set on forever discontent. But when one is fixed on being content with God, the mind is thankful for what God gave us.  Remember, our mindsets reflect our value system. Our value systems determine our character. In our character lies the strength and weakness in facing the various challenges in this temporal world. May God’s Spirit help you set your mind on the things above as you constantly meditate on God’s word. Amen.
