Episode Synopsis "GEMS with Dr. Ritu Raman"
Dr. Ritu Raman, a biomedical engineer at MIT and author, discusses her research and NEW book about building robots out of biological material. Outlined in her book, which is expected to be released in Fall of 2021, Ritu explains how constructing machines out of biological material allows for her technology to accurately react and regenerate in conjunction with bodily functions. Ritu incorporates chemistry, physics, and biology to create a multifaceted solution to such a complex problem. In a muscle-tendon-bone organization, the machines could utilize motor neurons that are responsive to neurotransmitters to ultimately enhance the ability of an individual with partial loss of muscular control to perform functions that muscles would naturally enable one to do.
