Episode Synopsis

Sermon by Pastor Jason Van Bemmel Psalm 86 - Abounding in Steadfast Love Main Point: Psalm 86 models profound prayer: acknowledging deep spiritual need and steadfastly focusing on God's goodness, greatness, and abounding steadfast love, seeking a "united heart" devoted to God, confidently seeking His help and glorifying Him in all trials. Outline Introduction: Embracing Spiritual Need • David's consistent self-identification as "poor and needy" highlights the blessedness of being "poor in spirit" as taught by Jesus. This humility opens us to God's "abundant steadfast love." II. Plea for Help Grounded in God's Character (vv. 1-7) • David earnestly petitions God to hear him, preserve his life, and be gracious. His confidence stems from God's character: "You are my God," "good and forgiving," "abounding in steadfast love," and "You answer me". This confidence, or "Christ-confidence," allows believers to prayerfully resist spiritual attacks. III. Affirming God's Greatness, Seeking a United Heart (vv. 8-13) • David shifts from personal troubles to God's unique glory and universal kingdom, affirming "none like you among the gods" and that "all nations...shall come and worship". The central prayer is "Teach me your way... unite my heart to fear your name," signifying undivided devotion to God. David resolves to praise God with his "whole heart," confident in God's "great steadfast love" and past deliverance. IV. Plea Amidst Persecution (vv. 14-17) • David faces "insolent," "ruthless," and "violent men" who disregard God. He powerfully contrasts them with God: "But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,"
