Dan Taren joins Michael Rasile on For the Love of Sports to discuss his company Scrimmage and all the iterations to the idea and the product.
The original idea for a sports betting company came as a sports betting hedge fund where Dan and his team would take investors' money and place bets with it. Placing a multitude of bets, they believe this would reduce the inherent risk and allow them to make real money doing it. They found this to be possible, but the amount of effort and energy that went into a day's work ended up not being worth it in their eyes.
This allowed them to take the technology they built to be successful in betting and bring it to the people as a consumer-facing app. Little did they know, the competition was already ramping up in this space and they needed to pivot.
Scrimmage is now a retention tool for sportsbooks where each user receives a character within the game and by placing bets on your favorite sportsbooks, you receive tokens to upgrade your character, or even cash out for Amazon gift cards and prizes!
