PARASHAT SHELACH 5783: This year parashat Shelach also happens to be the announcement of Rosh Chodesh Tamuz and we find ourselves in the 13th chapter of Numbers, just having left Sinai in last week's parasha, Be'ha'alotcha. Parashat Shelach spans from Numbers 13:1 to Numbers 15:41. The 12 Shli'chim or emissaries or "apostles" also called scouts, go to explore the Aretz HaKodesh. They return with excessive supernatural fruit and tell the people it is a land flowing with milk and honey but the positivitiy stops there. They start adding their fear based perceptions of the people and the cities. This does not go well, as a matter of fact it goes downhill from here sadly. The spies say we even saw giants and the convince the majority of Bnei Israel that the land would be too hard to invade and succeed. How is this related to the mission at hand in the book of Yehoshua/Joshua chapter 2? I propose it is about a wayward woman, owner of a place of ill repute, and two anonymous characters of whom we will discover their true identities and righteous lies perpetrated by a woman who becomes the wife of Yehoshua!
