Episode Synopsis

Do you ever feel overwhelmed, stressed and out of control? Do you suffer from feeling your heart racing and become overcome with feelings of guilt and dread? Then you may be suffering from anxiety. In this episode, Dawn delves deep into what anxiety actually is; what is it defined by and how does it make an individual feel. She discusses how it’s part of our brain’s make-up and part of being human but also analyses the many challenges and difficulties that arise when living with high levels of anxiety. Listen in to find out what anxiety is and discover how you can start to take back control to overcome it.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Anxiety is defined and described in many ways. The dictionary definition talks about it being a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease. It is also described as having a strong desire or concern for something to happen or to do something. As well as a generalised feeling of unease, stress, panic or fear that impacts your everyday life, both physically and mentally.
Anxiety initially exists to serve us. It acts as a warning, an alarm type function to warn us or to make us wary when something doesn’t look, sound or feel right.
Some people have more control over their feelings of anxiety and can either calm it or ignore it. When anxiety is activated in a normal situation and we react to it in a proportioned way it serves a purpose. However, if it’s something you suffer with when you aren’t in a situation that should cause anxiety or if you are unable to control the feelings then it can become a problem.
Dawn has suffered from severe anxiety herself many years ago. She still remembers how it felt, strong feelings of overwhelming guilt, failure and low self-esteem. She is not a doctor but she managed to help herself overcome anxiety and has helped many others like her too.
When someone is suffering from anxiety, they can feel a tremendous lack of control as their life is dictated by their subconscious mind reacting to various stimuli.
If your worrying affects your everyday life there are things you can do to take action and take back control. It doesn’t have to be who you are or define you and it’s not about deleting anxiety from your life. It’s about reducing the life-limiting effects of high anxiety and replace it with more helpful behaviours and patterns.
Understanding how and why your anxiety is triggered and your reactions to it is key in helping promote change. You can educate your subconscious mind to assess situations in a more helpful way. The first step to overcoming anxiety is to start to believe it’s possible.
