While song, poetry and rap have always been interconnected, twenty-first century poetry illustrates a gradual erasure of the distinction between these art forms. By studying poetry in conjunction with these other lyrical forms, contemporary poets will benefit from increased polysemic complexity, sampling as a method for artistic appropriation, and a strengthened sense of community among lyrical artists.
