Listen "Ep. 27 | Holidays: Cultivating Contentment"
Episode Synopsis
Welcome back to our holiday series! In today's episode we tackle the topic of contentment, why it's so hard in our culture, and share some practical ways we can be a people of joy this season.
Things we talk about:
Our unpopular holiday opinions
Would you consider people content in our society today, especially during the holidays? How would you describe them?
"A grateful man or woman will be a breath of fresh air in a world contaminated by bitterness and discontentment."
How are the people of God described?
How can we cultivate contentment in our lives and in our families?
Questions to consider:
Do I often complain about my circumstances, feeling like I deserve better?
Would others describe me as a thankful person?
Am I reserved or eager when it comes to expressing appreciation to others?
Do others hear me voice more complaints and negative comments than words of gratitude about the typical events of daily life?
Practical ideas shared on the show:
Read through Exodus or Deuteronomy together as a family this holiday season
Make a list for each of these headings: “Gifts from God” and “Gifts from Others.” Write down everything that comes to mind.
Gratitude can (and should) lead us to intercession. A good prayer starter is to ask God to remind you of those who do suffer from some of the things He’s spared you from. Commit to praying for a few people who are suffering this holiday season.
GratiKube- family activity
Noticing your necessary people- mailman, package delivery, coffee shop worker, child’s teacher or therapist.
Write out your personal testimony of how God saved you- what was your life like before he redeemed you? What has changed in your life since he delivered you?
Ask guests coming to your parties to bring a canned item to donate to a local food pantry
Put everyone’s name in a bowl and draw names. Say something you’re grateful for about that person
Read a biography: The Hiding Place (gain some perspective) or God’s Smuggler
Ask a friend to go through Choosing Gratitude by Nancy Leigh DeMoss (has a 30 day devotional)
