Eyewitness by Radio Diaries

Unscripted audio documentaries require a particular talent.  It demands the ability to convey and elicit a full range of human emotion in minutes, not hours, and do it in a way that listeners can understand viscerally with no further explanation. This art has been perfected by Joe Richman and the team at Radio Diaries.  For 30 years, this team has encouraged and empowered individuals to report on their own lives.  They work closely with everyday people to document their experience in diary form, and listeners hear actual histories unfiltered by the forces that shape how we collectively remember.  This team has pioneered a simplicity in their sound that leaves a listener hanging on every word and piece of tape. To elicit this tape requires unparalleled expertise in working with individuals who may not feel comfortable on mic or telling their story, and requires an Studs Terkel-style approach that asks a deceptively simple question: and then what happened?     This series is a collection of three eyewitness accounts to historical events we often know solely through images or history books.  These three stories are gripping and immersive, with incredible tape that transports a listener from a cursory understanding to one that is rich with individual experience. The work of Radio Diaries is public media at its core.  It literally brings the public onto the airwaves and venerates the every day experience.  This is something we’ve lost in a media landscape focused on algorithms and virality.  Meanwhile, Radio Diaries has been one of the few outlets that has carried its work into the digital audio landscape.  They continue to publish extensive and beautiful diaries, curriculum, live events and workshops.  But with their funding drastically cut, and public media stations at risk of closing down, this essential documentary form is endangered.  Learn more about Radio Diaries and their other work here: https://www.radiodiaries.org/
