In this episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham speaks with Dr. Sam Taraporevala, a retired Associate Professor & Head Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the autonomous St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai.
Born blind, his parents chose to educate him in a mainstream school and college, after which he pursued his PHD.
Between 2002 and 2003, while teaching at St Xavier's College, Dr Sam set out to explore the reason behind the declining numbers of blind and visually impaired students in his college, that resulted in the inception of the famous Xavier's Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC),one of the country’s finest resource centres for the blind. Fast forward to today, as an Executive Director, he has been at the forefront of social advocacy, creating awareness and addressing key access challenges for persons with low vision and blindness.
His work so far has resulted in the amendment of the Copyright Act, India in 2012; the deployment of over 30,000 accessible ATMs in India; and the opening up of Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics(STEM) education for blind and low vision students.
