2 Peter 3:14-18 form the last section (pericope) of Peter's letter. As we come to the conclusion, we are faced with the idea that we know a little bit about what is coming in the future for the earth, but also an idea about what comes after that (the new heavens and new earth - v. 13). So, we are waiting for those things. But, as Christians we know that we need to wait, the real question is what does that waiting look like? To answer that, we are governed by the idea in these last verses that We must fulfill our duties while we wait for the Lord!
In v. 14 we see that 1) OUR WAITING MUST BE BEAR CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS. a) We wait with confidence; b) we wait with holiness, and c) we wait with peace.
In vv. 15-16 we see that 2) OUR WAITING MUST HAVE A PROPER PERSPECTIVE. a) We must remember that the Lord's timing is different than ours. b) We must shift our view of the Lord's patience. c) We must balance our view with the rest of Scripture.
In v. 17 we see that 3) OUR WAITING MUST BE RESOLUTE. a) We have been told all these things; and b) Do not allow yourself to be carried away by false teachers.
