Listen "Book Bits: A visit to The New York Public Library"

Episode Synopsis

This podcast provides analysis on books and bookish news, and today Lisa discusses her visit to the main New York Public Library – Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.   The public library was opened on May 23, 1911, and is an impressive building and worth a visit. When you first walk up to the library, you’ll see the two iconic lions and can read a few fantastic stories about them.  Lisa also had an opportunity to visit limited-time exhibit. You can get more information about the library here.  In September 2021, the Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures showcases opened. You can get free tickets online or while at the library.  Also, Lisa also catches readers up with the latest news of the U.S. Government trial against Penguin Random House. The trial is in the 2nd week.   In the fall of 2020, Penguin Random House announced it was spending $2.18 billion to purchase competitor Simon & Schuster. The U.S. government has sued Penguin Random House arguing that this deal means fewer authors will be able to earn a living from writing.  The New Yorker asks the question about whether publishing is art or commerce and delves into how “backlists,” “Book Tok” and advance copies are essential in publishing today.  *The book titles mentioned include affiliate links.
