Listen "3/17 Update"
Episode Synopsis
Hi all,
Wow, this is hard. When we met for the first time in January none of us anticipated this. But distance learning is our new reality and we can make it work together.
As most of you already know, yesterday the UW system made the decision to move the remainder of this semester online, so we’ve already had our final face-to-face meeting. As sad as I am not to be together in person again, this was absolutely the right decision for social distancing to stop the spread of this illness.
If you haven’t seen my earlier message, I ask you again: stay home if you are able.
I am still working on the mechanics of how our class will look moving forward. I anticipate having those plans sometime next week. I appreciate your patience while I decide what can work best for us to finish the semester. Please take the survey I’m sending to help me make those decisions.
In the meantime, I promise this: I will not assign a bunch of new work. The social information processing (Walther, 1992) research clearly demonstrates that it takes us longer to communicate through technology than face-to-face, and I will be considering this as I design the remainder of our class.
Finally, I want to share a few tips for surviving staying in. These suggestions come from John Mayer’s weekend episode of Current Mood:
1. Shower & get dressed every day. Save pajamas for weekends & vacations.
2. Take in enough information to be informed and then stop.
3. Stop considering the pandemic two hours before you go to bed. Be gentle with yourself.
4. Talk on the phone for 30 minutes at night. Hearing yourself talk will help you remember who you are.
5. Clean up your space.
More than anything, I want you to know that we will work through this together. I appreciate you all more than you know.
Sincerely,
Dr. Edwards
