Listen "Remembering 9/11 and other devastating experiences with Dr. Richard Heaps"
Episode Synopsis
Where were you on September 11, 2001? Although many of us weren’t physically present for the tragedies that happened on this infamous day, we can all relate to the devastation and pain associated with this day and so many other tragedies. Dr. Richard Heaps joins Kristi this week to talk about trauma—both big traumas and “little-T” traumas that we all experience. As we work through our own experiences and help others through theirs, Dr. Heaps shows us how to change our mindsets, ask the right questions, and be a hero for others AND ourselves. Dr. Richard Heaps has been married for 59 years, is a father of 4, a grandfather of 16, and a great-grandfather of 9. He also has extensive work experience with those affected by trauma. He has been a clinical psychologist, emeritus professor at BYU counseling, and President of the Utah Psychological Association. He currently serves on a disaster response committee, and has been a Red Cross instructor and mental health volunteer for an incident stress management team. Dr. Heaps has traveled all over the country offering aid for emergency responders and individuals involved in natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other kinds of emergency and traumatic situations. He was in Manhattan directly after the tragedies of September 11th to provide aid for those at Ground Zero.
