The Metropolitan Museum is one of the largest and the fourth most frequently visited art museum in the world. Many claim that the influence of this museum is greater than the Uffizi gallery in Florence and even surpasses in regard to the influence the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. It is extremely large, made up of numerous buildings which are united under an enormous glass gallery-greenhouse.The resources of the museum number almost 3 million exhibits; and thanks to this size the museum is often compared to the Louvre, the British museum and the Vatican Museum.The exhibits of the museum span all periods of human history from Paleolithic to Pop-art, and all geographic regions of the planet and all varieties of art. The museum is divided into several thematic collections. One of the most interesting sections of the museum is the "Greek and Roman Art". The most important place in this collection is the first exhibit in the museum - an ancient Roman sarcophagus. In the "Egyptian Section" you can see unique masterpieces: jewelry of the Egyptian Pharaohs, the statue of Queen Hatshepsut, the temple complex of Dendur constructed prior to 10 BC. The Assyrian Gallery is especially impressive because of the enormous human-headed, winged bulls which 3000 years ago guarded the entrance to the throne room of King Assurnasirpal II. From his palace we can also find decorated walls with bas-reliefs with bearded warriors and cuneiform inscriptions. A separate section of the museum is dedicated to the art of the Ancient East. In this section we find objects of ivory, Assyrian reliefs, Sumarian sculptures and vessels of gold and silver.And of course an entire section of the museum is dedicated to American art. Here are presented paintings, sculpture and objects of decorative art of the inhabitants of American of various times. The Museum's collection of paintings deserves special attention. In the museum are displayed works of the famous masters of the Renaissance: Botticelli, Titian, Rafael, Albrecht Durer and many others. Also the museum posses the largest collection in the world of Rembrandt's - here there are 23 of his works. The museum has 5 paintings by Vermeer more than in the British museum. If you visit the museum on Friday evening or on Saturday a string quartet will be playing for you. On the lowest level of the museum is an information center with a lecture hall and large maps of the museum by floors.
