Listen "Episode 17: Rockefeller Center"
Episode Synopsis
Between 48th and 51st Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues are the 12 large buildings of the Rockefeller Center, built here in the first third of the 20th century. Most of the buildings are connected by crosswalks and galleries. They can be called a small city within a city; it has everything: offices, stores, cafes, restaurants, physicians, schools, theaters, cinemas, post-offices, tour agents, amenities as well as small open spaces with waterfalls and gardens. The central building of this complex is the elongated, stair-stepped General Electric Building, decorated with glass and limestone bas reliefs. It is located to the right side in the direction you are walking. On the 70th floor of this building is a completely open observational platform. At a slightly lower level is a small space bordered by shields with benches in front of windows. From this observational deck there is a fantastic view of the Empire State building and Central Park. The museum located n the General Electric Building gives visitors basic information about the history of the complex.Just in front of the building is the small space the Lower Level. In the center of the space in the summer there is a small fountain which has a decorated with a gilded bronze figure of Prometheus. The space changes with the seasons. In the summer there are large vats with palm trees and small tables with canopies. But by late autumn in place of the summer cafe a skating rink with artificial ice appears. In front of the entrance to the main building, a large Christmas tree has been erected, yearly since 1936. By the end of September, the local press already begins to actively guess the choice and the delivery of the enormous evergreen tree for Rockefeller Center. The Christmas Tree remans in place until January 2. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree - you will be among the millions of others who come to see and to admire the lighted tree.Photo Rockefeller Center by David Merrett is licensed under CC BY 2.0
