Listen "Episode 13: Grand Army Plaza"
Episode Synopsis
You are now on the Grand Army Plaza. On one side of the Plaza there is a golden statue of General William Tecumseh Sherman and on the other side of the Plaza there is the functioning Pulitzer Fountain. The fountain is in the tradition of the Italian Renaissance. Five pools at various levels support a sixth column in the shape of a shell which is topped by a bronze figure of the Roman goddess Pomona, the goddess of fruit and fruitfulness. Behind the fountain rises up one of the most famous hotels in the world, probably well known to you from many art films. This is the building of the Plaza Hotel. The hotel first opened its doors to visitors almost 110 years ago. Since that time an uncountable number of celebrities have stayed at the hotel. Marilyn Monroe famously posed for photograms at this hotel. It was here in the 1930's that Greta Garbo posed for the prominent photographer Cecil Beaton. Judy Garland and her daughter Liza Minnelli, Marlene Dietrich as well as many others lived at the Plaza. The marriage of Richard Nixon's daughter was held in the ballroom of the hotel. Just offhand here is a short list of films filmed at the Plaza - Barefoot in the Park, Crocodile Dundee, and Home Alone 2Photo The Plaza, New York by Jill Clardy is licensed under CC BY 2.0
