Listen "Different Noises 114"
Episode Synopsis
This episode brings together a wide range of experimental, ambient, and progressive sounds - a mix built around mood and texture rather than genre. It opens with Unsafe At Any Speed by Orcutt, Shelley, and Miller—an improvised collision of guitar, percussion, and electronics—then moves through cello minimalism (Kirin McElwain), post-rock layering (Tortoise), and gamelan-inspired textures (Bill Brennan & Andy McNeil). Electronic and ambient works dominate the middle stretch: Ro(b)//ert Lundberg’s modular abstractions, Kali Malone & Drew McDowall’s drone collaboration, and Troth’s reworking of Cold Hands Warm Heart. There’s also dubwise pop from Rob Smith & Ammoye, and contemporary classical from Eydís Evensen. Later selections include Eddodi surrealism, lo-fi country deconstruction , and archival material from The Go-Betweens. Peter Hammill appears in three forms solo , in duet with Roger Eno , and in progressive collaboration with Isildur’s Bane. The mix is loosely themed around dislocation, memory, and sonic instability, although this was not a deliberate programming decision, it just came together that way.
