Episode Synopsis

MINJIKW - MKW Art / Minji Kang-Watrous

I am interviewing Minji Kang-Watrous. Minji creates her art meticulously by hand using the ancient Korean tradition of Hanji paper making. She learned the process as a child through her mother, who was a Hanji artist. Her tools are handmade paper, ancestral patterns, and symbols drawn from Korean domestic life and scholarly tradition. I first became aware of Minji and her stunning art at one of my favorite art shows of the past, Vinyl Thoughts, which was an ongoing art show that celebrated custom vinyl toys around the country and in Dallas. I remember being floored by her beautiful custom vinyl toys and baffled by the amount of detail, care and love that went into her pieces.

I have had the good fortune to run into Minji often throughout the years of knowing her and I always enjoy hearing and seeing all of the exciting things she has is creating. I adore her and her husband Paul. Minji’s work has been featured in multiple magazine and galleries like Kettle Art, Adolphus Tower Gallery and the other art fair. She currently has a stunning collection of artwork on display and for sale in her studio, located in the Tin District, just a few miles west of the Margaret hunt bridge off of sylvan and fabrication street. She is someone who happily invites anyone curious into her world with open arms.
