Listen "63 – Jake Fiennes – Part 2"
Episode Synopsis
We start this week with Andrew's Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 25th November 2019. In this week's Farmchat we have part two of Andrew and Ian's meeting with Jake Fiennes, General Manager of conservation at Holkham. They kick off with the controversial question of whether shooting goes hand in hand with conservation. With public spending on UK biodiversity down 42% proportionally on GDP - they discuss financial support for farmers and the proposal of payment for public goods - services farmers could deliver such as soil health and biodiversity alongside food production. They also discuss the change in rape seed dressings and the lack of bees that were ever found in rape seed crops and increasing evidence of neonics negative effects on wildlife and the advantages of different drilling times for rape seed post the ban. They discuss other ways to increase diversity on farms and Holkham's project to encourage pink-footed geese to continue to over-winter on the Norfolk Norfolk coast.
