Lizzie and Joe’s Design and Build Therapy - Episode 1:
What do therapy and building projects have in common? More than you’d know!
Who - Lizzie Fraher & Joe Fraher
Description - Lizzie and Joe are a husband and wife pair of Architects who run Fraher & Findlay - an architecture, build and joinery company in South London, and have been designing and building projects together for the past 15 years. Lizzie is a featured Architect on BBC2’s building show - “Your Home Made Perfect”.
In this first episode they introduce the many different roles they take on a project, marriage counsellors, financial consultants, therapists - as well as architects and builders. Building your home can be one of the most stressful (and rewarding) things that you can do, so it’s not surprising that it might feel like you need a little therapy to get through it. They would like to invite you into a comfortable chair and offer their services. They dig into the detail of how to design and build spaces so if you’re about to start your own build, you’re interested in buildings or are a budding designer then this podcast will show how they do it, and the importance of trust in your relationship with your architect and builder.
This first podcast will discuss how a project runs and how it can be equated to a therapy session.
Stage 1: Conversation - Build relationship with client. Build a relationship based on honesty & openness.
Stage 2: The Assessment - Look at brief in detail and build on this with the client. Assess the integrity of the building.
Stage 3: The Exercises - New and different things to try as spatial solutions to the building. Client feedback and changes to design. They work to understand the needs of the client and uses of the space.
Stage 4: The Homework - For the clients. Reviewing designs and thinking about new ways of looking at their space and behaviour in it. They give clients the skills and eye to interpret designs using tools such as sketches, 3D and VR.
