This is the tale of how I nearly lost control of my computer—and my personal data—to a fake tech support scam. It was a regular weekday afternoon. I was working on my computer, deep in the middle of an important project, when my phone rang. The caller ID showed a toll-free number, and for some reason, I felt compelled to answer. On the other end was a man with a calm, professional voice. ‘Hello, this is Sam from Microsoft Support. We’ve detected a serious issue with your computer that needs immediate attention. His tone was urgent, but reassuring at the same time. He claimed that my computer had been sending error reports to Microsoft, and that they needed to fix the problem before it escalated.
