Episode Synopsis

On Creature Comforts, Kevin Farrell is joined by Dr. Troy Majure, veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center in Jackson and Libby Hartfield retired director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. With the holiday season underway, we’re turning our attention skyward to one of the longest-running citizen science efforts in the world: the Christmas Bird Count. Each winter, volunteers across the country head outdoors to help track bird populations and migration patterns—data that’s critical for understanding the health of our ecosystems. To help us unpack why this count matters and what it reveals about birds in Mississippi and beyond, we’re joined by Jason Hoeksema, Professor of Biology, Associate Chair, and Graduate Program Coordinator at the University of Mississippi.Delta Wind Birds website:https://www.deltawindbirds.org/Search for a Christmas Bird Count near you:https://www.audubon.org/community-science/christmas-bird-count/join-christmas-bird-countTo submit your own question for the show, email us at [email protected] or send us a message with the Talk To Us feature in the MPB Public Media App.If you enjoyed listening to this podcast, please consider contributing to MPB: https://donate.mpbfoundation.org/mspb/podcast Hosted on Acast.
