Around Brisbane/Meanjin DJ circles, Cosmo Cater is somewhat of a Jedi Knight. Accomplished, calm, methodical... and deadly.
Cutting his teeth on a steady diet of house and techno vinyl in the mid to late 90s, Cosmo built up an enviable record of club and festival slots through the 2000s and forged his own path, playing everything from disco through house, breaks, techno and trance. He held down a bunch of residencies and made sure his technical and musical prowess spoke for him.
It was the warm-up slot though, that became Cosmo’s own. There are very few club identities for whom he hasn’t respectfully and diligently warmed up (Sasha, Deadmau5, Chemical Brothers, Orbital, John Digweed to name a few), and the world’s best comfortably sing his praises when they tour Brisbane and have Cosmo lay the groundwork for an unforgettable night.
Throughout his career, Cosmo has given back an incredible amount to Brisbane’s vibrant dance culture, as an esteemed print and online journalist for Scene, Inthemix, 3DWorld and more, right hand man for premier league promotional outfit Auditree and mentor to the next generation of Brisbane’s best DJs. The young lad who began handing out flyers and working nightclub doors, eventually graduated to the turntables, media, recording studios - far beyond his humble beginnings.
The past few years have seen a string of tasteful support slots for some of the coolest cats in dance music, including Bicep, Dixon, Kolsch, Green Velvet, Eats Everything, Nina Kraviz, Dubfire, Yotto, Huxley, Tensnake and Todd Terje.
In recent times Cosmo set tongues wagging with his memorable warm-up for Eric Prydz aka Cirez D, as well as resuming his consistent record of setting up Sasha for success - both opening and closing for him at The Warehouse in Brisbane. He’s continued to make his sets stand apart with tailor made re-edits of new and classic tunes.
The ‘progressive’ sound of the early-mid 2000s is a sound inextricably linked with Cosmo, but these days the sound of Cosmo Cater is different yet retains similar elements – it is groovy, warm, melodic and inviting. It is pointless to resist.
