Episode Synopsis

Majek Fashek was an award-winning Nigerian reggae singer. He was a star that shone so brightly in the 1980s and 90s, with songs that shaped my childhood. ‘Send down the rain’ was an unofficial national anthem that ruled the airwaves when it was released. Majek signed to Interscope Records and released the critically acclaimed album Spirit Of Love,  he later moved to a division of Island Records where he released a cover version of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song".
I met up with Majek in Lagos, in the twilight of his career. He wasn't the smooth Majek I grew up watching on TV and listening to on the radio. But he was still a star with remarkable wit and humour. In this episode, we chatted about his childhood, how he broke into stardom and how everything came tumbling down. No air, no forming. Just Majek. Human, with stories of triumphs, challenges and failures like the rest of us.
