White Camellia Day is celebrated annually on September 19th and 2025 marked the 132nd anniversary of women winning the right to vote in New Zealand - the first country in the world to do so. This year's celebration organised by The National Council of Women (Christchurch Branch) featured inspiring speeches from the Council president Louise Tapper, Deputy Mayor Pauline Cotter, Mayoress Chrissy Mauger, Robyn Burgess from Heritage NZ, Katie Chilton from Te Whakaoranga Charitable Trust, Ruby and Aaliyah from Chch Youth Council, Helen Osbourne from Kate Sheppard House, with Judith Sutherland presenting the Kate Sheppard Award to PhD. student Katherine Ellis.
