Being a tired, weary and exhausted soul is a common American condition. This verse is showing us so much!
We have 2 sabbaths showing us two very important points.
1-we need rest.
2-we find rest only in Christ.
One thing we often think we see is that we must always hustle, 7 days a week. But it is not true.
In this verse, we see Jesus acting as Lord of the sabbath. The Pharisees will not stop dogging him. They are so entrenched in their legalism, that they can’t seem to stay out of other people’s business.
But what we see the Pharisees see is Jesus and His disciples doing work on the sabbath. This was a serious command! Actually, punishable by death. It’s because God saved them from slavery, so the sabbath was a reminder of Who saved them. Refusal to rest and worship is refusal to acknowledge the power and sovereignty of God. So the punishment was severe.
The first sabbath mentioned, Jesus *does not* make a case for why the sabbath is not good or useful. Instead, He begins to redefine the object and the use of the sabbath. He starts with a story about David. And when David is given the holy bread for His survival. The person is more important than the thing. And Jesus declares “I am the Lord of the sabbath” what he’s saying is:
1- he’s above the sabbath. He sets the order. He sets the rules.
2- everyone finds their rest in me. In the Pharisees habit of increasing the rules, the Pharisees have made the day of rest an actual burden. The sabbath wasn’t meant to be a burden, it was supposed to be a reminder to rest and be pointed back to God.
In the second sabbath mentioned, Jesus demonstrates. The man with the withered hand, is certainly in pain. AND he would have been socially outcast to some degree. This is a man who would have needed rest. The Pharisees were so concerned with the day of rest, they would have withheld rest from someone who needed it because of the day it is. So, Christ gives this man rest. He brings the man up so everyone can see, and asks the Pharisees, “are you going to permit me to withhold rest from a man in the name of rest?”
And the Pharisees were furious! Mindlessly raging. They couldn’t celebrate someone coming to rest on the day of rest.
It was only after coming into contact with Jesus that we find rest. Rest is not in law keeping - rest is in Him.
And remember, we, in our culture, miss rest because we reject any constraint at all on the sabbath now. We never seem to stop, seeking achievement, believing that achievement will bring us rest. When Jesus is the one who brings us there.
