Listen "114-History Mysteries and the Battle Against the Cylons-Altena"
Episode Synopsis
In the television series 'Battlestar Galactica,' sentient robots called Cylons are engaged in a tireless quest to rid the universe of humanity. A fleshy remnant resists extermination with a variety of weapons and tactics, one of the most important being the wired telephone. How can we assess the best uses of the new and powerful information technologies like AI and still provide the friction needed to produce sharp minds? Is it time to ditch the internet and dust off the overhead projector? Increasingly, I have been using mysteries to teach various topics in my social studies classes. While these kinds of activities have been around for some time, their usefulness is of increasing importance. At a time when answers are easily found through a quick internet search, the use of mysteries can teach students the value of asking good questions, testing hypotheses, going down rabbit holes, making mistakes and collaborating with others.
