Born the 4th of 11 children to poor sharecroppers in Mississippi, Charlie taught himself how to play guitar when his mother bought him his first one at age 14, but it was his love of baseball that got Charlie picked for the NY Yankees farm team. Unfortunately for Charlie, but great for country music fans, an injury sidelined his baseball career and propelled him into a giant name in the recording industry.
