Proverbs 20:21 An inheritance gained hastily in the beginning will not be blessed in the end.
Bad Love
R Aylor
The desire to have what we deserve and not have to wait seems to be the desire of all men... but it’s a false premise. This example Solomon gives concerning an inheritance is a great example. There's this hunger inside of men… this seed of greed that only needs a sprinkle of hope to feed it and the next thing you know it becomes an overwhelming obsession that controls us.
1st Timothy 6:10 acmes to mind: For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Notice the object of the verse is not money but the kind of love that is associated with it. This is a powerful self serving kind of love that excludes love for others… Its a kind of love that is greedy for the inheritance and breeds distrust among siblings and causes family rifts that last a lifetime. This kind of evil love does not think his brother or sister deserve much of the inheritance at all because they were not the kinds of children to their parents they should have been.
This lends nicely to the truth in the next verse Proverbs 20:22 which says:
Proverbs 20:22 Do not say, “I will repay evil”; wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you.
An inheritance gained quickly is not waiting on the Lord. We may be tempted to rationalize the inheritance as deserving to us by saying it would be justice. God teaches us to leave justice to him. Don’t be vengeful. That can put your heart in a bad bitter place out of fellowship with God.
And the thing is… Justice the way we are thinking would not be in our best interest. As I mentioned… we rationalize things out of balance… so that things appear in our favor. That leads us to the next verse in todays passage.
Proverbs 20:23 Unequal weights are an abomination to the LORD, and false scales are not good.
Look, none of us have been the children to our parents we should have been. Leave the earthly inheritance in the hands of the Lord. Dont be obsessed with money and things… rather yearn for the spiritual riches which are found in Christ.
For those who hope in Christ… He has promised us an inheritance that is an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison full of immeasurable treasures beyond our comprehension… And he gives us a sample of whats to come in the joys we experience in seeing more and more of his glory until that day.
