Episode Synopsis

Through a series of interviews, with a variety of people in all walks of life. We try to figure the question "What is a Blerd", beyond the heterogenous combination of the words Black and Nerd. Coming to terms with a deeper understanding of the turn of phrase and its place in American vernacular. The term owes it notoriety to main seem popularity to it being coined on the NBC series Scrubs in 2006, Season 6, Episode 2 the episode “My Best Friend’s Baby’s Baby and My Baby’s Baby,” in it Dr. Christoper Turk (Donald Faison) describes his cousin as "the worlds biggest Blerd".
On this episode we interview Deborah Hawkins, penned Debra Renée Byrd, began writing after a blank book project in elementary school and never stopped, fashioning stories based on her favorite TV shows and movies before creating more original works. She studied at the University of the Arts and Florida State University before settling down and graduating from Temple University. She now resides in her hometown of Dover, DE and works for the State.

She loves fantasies, superheroes, is a trekkie and a brown coat. She loves television and lives for Final Fantasy video games, having collected most of them. She has read a myriad of authors, but her favorites are Octavia Butler and N.K. Jemisin.
