Listen "It was NOT a "bad day" - it was sexism, fetishism, racism, xenophobia"
Episode Synopsis
We stand with our AAPI siblings. Please visit this list of Stop Asian Hate Resources to find out more about how you can help: https://linktr.ee/stopasianhateresources
In this bonusode, we debrief about last week's tragedy and share some frames for processing hate crimes.
We needed some time and space to process and as you'll hear, we're still struggling but we felt it is important for us to use whatever platform we have to drive dialogue and action around this. Coincidentally, today, March 24th, the day we recorded has been lifted as a Day of Solidarity for #stopasianhate (see more info below from the instagram @stopasianhate)
Many of us have been inspired by the protests against the ongoing wave of attacks targeting the Asian community but have been unable to attend in-person - this event allows us to show our support for the community from anywhere in the world and stand united against racism.
In the United States, over 3700 self-reported incidents of anti-Asian discrimination have been recorded since February 2020, over 10 a day. The US has also seen a 150% increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans despite overall hate crimes going down 7% with a disproportionate number targeting women.
The increased targeting has not been limited to the United States. In Vancouver, Canada, hate crimes against Asian-Canadians increased by 717%. 8 in 10 Asian-Australians have experienced instances of racism since 2020.
On March 16, 2021, 6 women of Asian descent were gunned down in #Atlanta, Georgia.
#EnoughIsEnough. It's time to stand up and speak out.
