It was important to those in the early Church to take care of the basic needs of widows. They chose men full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom to oversee it. Stephen was one of these men. He also spent time explaining things in the synagogue and did such a good job of it that it made some men mad enough to accuse him of blasphemy, which would allow them to kill him.
