Listen "Using Hymns in the Lord's Supper"
Episode Synopsis
Send us a textHymns have been associated with the Lord' Supper or Holy Communion since the night in which Jesus instituted this act of worship. We read in Mark 14:26 And when they had sung a hymn they went out... Mostly likely they sang from the later part of Psalm 118. A psalm associated with the Passover. In keeping with the Biblical purpose of singing in the worship of God in Christ Jesus the psalms, hymns and songs we sing should be a way of the word of Christ dwelling in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom with thankfulness in our hearts to God.This message illustrates the use of hymns in three recent communion services. The songs varied in their purpose from teaching, words of institution to sung prayers to God.The hymns recited from three recent Sundays are:How Sweet and Awesome is the Place > a teaching followed by prayerService 2Jesus Invites His Saints >a teaching and exhortation song at beginningFor the Bread Which You Have Broken > a prayer hymn to the Lord Jesus at the conclusionService 3When on That Night ('Twas on that Night) a hymn of the words of institution in two parts.
