Butland played for Canberra Eclipse and QAS Sting in the W-NSL / Ansett Summer Series. She would switch to Australian rules football, earning selection to the All-Australian team in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011, as well as winning the AFL Cairns Coach of the Year award four years in a row (2011 to 2014). AFL Cairns have named their Player of the Year award after her (the Jo Butland Medal).
