Exile is what happens when it's too dangerous to be allowed to remain at home. We cannot understand the story God is telling in Scripture if we can't also understand the justice and horror of exile. Being removed from the Garden was an exile. Being taken into captivity in Babylon was an exile. Being excluded from God's Kingdom will be a final, awful, exile. We long for home, but we know that for now, this isn't it.
We're in exile, but Jesus is preparing a home for us.
