Star Trek Lower Decks, set to engage on August 6, is the second animated series in the Star Trek family of productions. The Animated Series of the early 1970s was, more or less, a translation of the original series that retained its high-brow science fiction story-lines with mediocre animation. Lower Decks, in contrast, seems to be a somewhat lower-brow take on the TNG era, told within superior animation. This one looks very different than any other Star Trek offering out there, which gives it promise. A legacy of TAS of the 70s is the writing, with many of those stories and sub-plots having emerged in later episodes and films. Lower Decks looks promising, and, if the writing is consistent with the traditionally high caliber level of Star Trek writing, then this show should be a winner.
