Magneto, one of the most complex and enduring characters in Marvel Comics, has been both a villain and an anti-hero, as well as a sometimes ally to the X-Men. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Magneto first appeared in X-Men #1 in 1963, where he immediately established himself as the X-Men’s primary antagonist. As the self-declared protector of mutantkind, Magneto has often been portrayed as a militant revolutionary, willing to use violence to achieve his goals. His powers of magnetism, allowing him to control metal and generate electromagnetic fields, make him one of the most formidable forces in the Marvel Universe.
