Numbers chapter one from verse one to verse fifty-four is a historical record of the plan the Mighty One asked Moses to implement a little over one year after the Israelites had left Egypt. The plan simple and wise required Moses to take a census of the people of Israel. Moses and Aaron are not to act alone but with the assistance of chosen leaders from each of the twelve tribes who were to be in charge of counting by name all males who were twenty years old and above. The registration of these individuals as the commentator Guzik states, was the first step in taking the Promised Land - an inventory to see where Israel was and what Israel had to get where the Mighty One wanted them to be.
