In Genesis chapter 38, Tamar, who was twice a widow, is accused of being a prostitute. Her first husband Er was killed by Yahweh because he was wicked. His younger brother Onan who was given to Tamar was killed by Yahweh because he failed to perform his duty of raising a son in his late brother’s honour by his wife Tamar. Now Tamar who had been without a husband for some time is found to be pregnant. She is accused before her father-in-law Judah, who pronounces and is looking to apply capital punishment. In a surprising twist to this story about a pregnant widow, Tamar defeats her accusers by showing that Judah, her father-in-law, was responsible for her pregnancy.
