WOLFGANG VOIGT - RÜCKVERZAUBERUNG IM TUNNEL


Rückverzauberung (Reverse Enchantment) is an ongoing project by Wolfgang Voigt (also known as the man behind Gas, as well as behind many other aliases - also the founder of the Kompakt label). This project started in 2011 as a single track on the Pop Ambient 2011 compilation, and was followed by 9 further editions, all of them released on the Profan label, another label run by Voigt.


Later, the Astral Industries label released Rückverzauberung Live In London (2015) and Rückverzauberung Exhibition (2021) - and now Rückverzauberung Im Tunnel is the 40th release of their steadily growing catalog. And this is quite an intense 48-minute experience!


Whether this music should be called 'ambient' remains debatable. I guess 'power ambient' - the kind that comes alive at higher volumes, not lower - is a better fitting description. The sound of Im Tunnel is not meant to be played in the background. It feels as if you're surrounded by a multitude of roaring jets, perpetually accelerating and decelerating. The intensity never lets up – quite the contrary. I guess this would work very well in a surround exhibition setting, by the way.


"Pulsing undulations rise and fall like the turbines of a spacecraft, marked by dissonant chords and a simmering cloud of complex and ever-shifting textures. [...] A treacherous voyage, and possibly bewildering for some, the work is both unrelenting and uncompromising."


I'm not familiar with áll of the previous Rückverzauberung editions, but the ones I know are definitely not as relentless as Im Tunnel.So: "Should one decide to step into the tunnel, be sure to take all necessary precautions and procedures."


Rückverzauberung Im Tunnel is released on black as well as on clear vinyl, and also available as a digital download. It can be pre-ordered from the Astral Industries Bandcamp page, but also from the Kompakt website. The latter also offers the full audio to pre-listen (below is only a fragment)
