How do we improve DEI in STEM in higher education? Let’s start by understanding whose perspectives get centered. Rather than focusing on the deficits of what marginalized groups don’t have, let’s focus on the assets they do have. We need to shift the ideas of who is a good scientist. It’s also about brave individuals paving the way for others who look like them by being the first, the few or the only because representation matters.
