Summary: Nvidia investing $100 billion into OpenAI, which then promptly spends it on Nvidia chips. It's circular economics at its finest, and frankly, it makes me a bit queasy. Not because the money's flowing, but because we're essentially putting all our eggs in Sam Altman's basket. His latest blog post about "abundant intelligence" reads like a masterclass in stakeholder management - hitting every note from "fundamental human right" to "American supremacy" to "trust us with more billions, please."
Whilst we're throwing money at AI infrastructure, Harvard Business Review coined the term "work slop" to describe the very real problem of people using AI to generate impressive-looking nonsense that actually creates more work for everyone else. It's the productivity equivalent of junk food, looks substantial, tastes like cardboard.
Finally, the UK managed to claw back £500 million from fraudsters using what appears to be a fairly straightforward GPT-4 tool, proving that sometimes the most effective AI applications are refreshingly mundane.
